Guest Post: 10 Ways To Make Money as a Stay-at-Home Mom

The following is a guest post by Randall Davidson of Audio Transcription.

Although the economy is slowly starting to turn around, millions of people across the country are still out of work and struggling financially. Many stay-at-home moms are facing the difficult choice between being at home to raise their children and returning to work to ensure that their families can make ends meet. In this post, I offer 10 ways that stay-at-home moms can make money without having to entrust their children to daycare or nannies. All of these jobs offer mothers the opportunity to supplement their family's income while still being present for their children.
  1. Freelance writing - Local and online journals and magazines often struggle to fill space with relevant content. Generally, these positions pay by the word. The more extensive your freelance portfolio, the higher this rate will be. A great way to create a body of work is to volunteer -- for a little while -- as a contributor until you've built up your portfolio.
  2. Customer Service - More than 200,000 people within the US offer customer support from home. At-home customer service representatives answer phone calls, schedule appointments and provide information about the organizations they represent.
  3. Consulting - Consultants offer services and/or advice in their area(s) of expertise. This form of employment offers the option of working as a contractor for both small and large organizations. Consultants offer specialized knowledge about a variety of subject areas, which can be as specific as lactation consulting or as broad as social media consulting.
  4. Web Development - For those with technical skills, web developers are in high demand. This type of work offers a schedule that is far more flexible than most other opportunities.
  5. Data Entry - This job requires one to input data into a web interface from a variety of source documents. The faster you type, the more you can earn. High speed internet is a requirement for this type of position.
  6. Educational Work - These positions often require a college degree or a teaching certificate. Typically, those who do educational work from home are either grading tests or tutoring students. This could be seasonal work.
  7. Research - Companies will hire at-home workers to conduct research for their businesses, court documentation or to complete background checks on potential employees. High speed internet access is necessary for this position.
  8. Voice-over Work - This type of work tends to be assigned on a freelance basis. Sites like Voice.net offer a platform for voice actors and professional voice-over talent to post samples of work and connect with businesses looking for talent.
  9. Your Old Job - Depending on the nature of your work with your previous employer, many organizations are now comfortable with the work from home concept if you have a work history with that company. Ask your previous employer's human resources department about these opportunities or speak directly with your old boss.
  10. Transcription -The US Department of Labor estimates that the medical transcription industry will grow by 11% between 2008 and 2018.  Even outside of medical transcription, there will be a continued need for the conversion of files from audio to text across a variety of fields that will encourages employers to use transcription services.

Brand New Baby Event - 3 Blogs for Parents with Little Ones

More and more nowadays when a person has a question, we google it. Using the internet to get answers to our problems can be very helpful, as long as you think about what you read and don't take what you read as the be all and end all of answers.

When reading advice on blogs, it's what worked for that one blogger. It may or may not work for you. However is usually doesn't hurt to give it a try.

Here are some blogs I know of that are perfect for parents with new babies.

Troublesome Tots blogs about sleep troubles you often encounter with babies and toddlers and how you can help them.

Parenting and New Baby Advice Blog is by Baby Gifts and Gift Baskets and has many articles on babies.

Best for Babes
Best for Babes is THE breastfeeding resource, way better than any other I've seen. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. It's sort of a cross between a website and blog.

REVIEW: Baby Bond Nursing Sash (Couture)

I nurse my baby and I'll nurse him wherever we are if he's hungry. I can feed him without showing much at all but sometimes he lets go and looks around or I have trouble getting him on and I show a bit more than I'd like to.

My main trouble is my flabby belly sticking out the side since I lift my shirts to nurse. Yes I'm more self conscious about my belly than my breast.

Baby Bond is a nursing sash, NOT a nursing cover. Nursing covers cover the baby, a nursing sash covers the breast (or belly.) There are three types of Baby Bond sashes: Original, Flex and Couture.

I was sent a couture Baby Bond sash to try out and review. I picked that one because it is the only one that can be used almost as a belly band, and covers my belly when I nurse in public. All three will cover the breast completely while you nurse if you nurse from the top of your shirt but I do not own any shirts like that.

Watch this video to see how it can be used both ways. After that I have some photos of me using it!

Here is me (In my Guiding shirt) nursing Liam with the Baby Bond Couture

Pros:

  • Does NOT cover the baby
  • You can see what you are doing
  • Lightweight
  • Easy storage as it rolls up into a small tube that could be added to your diaper bag.
  • Comes in different colours
  • Once you learn how, it's quick to put on and take off.
Cons
  • Took a few tries to figure out how to use it at first but actually quite simple.
  • I don't like the "tail". You can tuck it in somewhere but it bugged me.
  • Mostly designed for nurse from the top shirts which I don't own. But I can still use mine (couture) as a belly band to cover my belly
Overall it's a great product, especially if you nurse from the top.

Use the code CALLISTA when purchasing to receive 25% off your order!

*Disclosure: I received the product(s) mentioned above free of charge by the company or PR representative for evaluation purposes. No other compensation was provided. See my Disclosure Policy for more information.

        Getting Back in the Sack After a Baby

        Image: photostock / FreeDigitalPhotos.net
        Having a baby is a big change and it affects all parts of your life. You are instructed to wait 6 weeks after birth to restart intercourse generally to allow your body to heal.

        If you had a vaginal birth, you may have had an episiotomy which you will want to heal completely. If you had a Cesarean, you had major surgery and need to not do anything strenuous for 6 weeks.

        However going to your 6 week appointment does not mean you will be ready physically or emotionally.

        Reasons you may not be ready:
        1. If you had a bad tear or even just a regular episiotomy, doesn't mean at 6 weeks it won't hurt anymore. Not to scare anyone but I had a fourth degree tear with my second child and it still was a bit painful to have sex over a year later. (Although we only waited 8 weeks to resume sex - I just dealt with the pain.)
        2. You are dealing with an influx of emotions as your hormones change and you are in love with your new baby. You may be dealing with baby blues or even just be so in love with the baby that you only want to take care of him or her.
        3. You're tired. Notice I didn't say you MAY be tired. All new moms are tired, some more than others, it all depends on how the baby sleeps although in general, it's not much the first few weeks since they have to eat so often.
        4. You may be breastfeeding and some women struggle with the idea of your breasts being used for food and for sex at the same time. (For that matter, there are husbands who refuse to touch or kiss a women's breasts when she's breastfeeding.)
        5. You may be afraid of getting pregnant again. You should have talked birth control at your 6 week appointment. Make sure you are implementing your preferred method and use any backup birth control you need to, depending on what you picked. Remember you can get pregnant BEFORE your period returns.
        Remember, you do NOT have to have sex again until you are ready. Just don't ignore your man completely. Spend some time together when the baby is asleep, kiss and hug, or even do other "bed" things other than sex.  Explain to your  man why you are not ready so he doesn't think it's something he did.

        When you are ready, take it slow. If you had a tear or episiotomy, go on top so you can be in control. Trust me.

          I haven't chosen yet but I will be doing a review of that item during this event.

          Stylish Baby Bedding for Your Nursery from Baby Bedding Zone

          *This is a sponsored post. All opinions are 100% mine.

          An important part of putting together your new baby's nursery is deciding on the bedding. You'll want to pick something that will work in the room and that everyone in the family is comfortable with. Baby bedding doesn't have to be little yellow duckies or baby booties. You can get something as stylish as the rest of your home, that will work well into at least toddlerhood, on the toddler bed.

          Baby Bedding Zone offers hundreds of themes and styles of baby, toddler and children's bedding. From simple stripes or gingham to themed sets such as elephant baby bedding, fairy baby bedding, dinosaur crib bedding, sports baby bedding, zebra crib bedding and garden baby bedding.

          You can search for bedding by colour, style (e.g. modern, vintage, simple), gender, theme, even material (e.g. Cotton, Chenille or Silk.) You can find neutral bedding too of course. The sets seem to come with four or nine items plus there are other matching items you can purchase with it (such as art for the wall, laundry hamper, light shade or wallpaper border.)

          The website is very easy to navigate and they also sell bedroom decor such as clocks, hampers, valances, picture frames or storage bins. They also sell diaper bags, designer receiving blankets and baby gifts such as pacifier clips, nursing covers and much more.

          Also you don't have to buy everything in a set. You can always purchase just the crib sheet or the crib sheet, blanket and bed skirt. Or any combination thereof. If you want it all however, purchase a 9 piece set plus all the extras.

          Baby Bedding Zone offers free shipping on orders over $99, Worldwide shipping, a 110% Price Match, 365 Day Returns and Live Online Customer Support. Check out the Customer Service page for details but let me share what the 110% Price Match means. I've not seen this anywhere else:
          "We will meet and beat ANY online advertised price for any product we sell by 10% of the difference! Baby Bedding Zone will not be undersold! In the event that you find a lower price from another online store on a currently in-stock product we carry, we will beat it by 10% of the difference." - from Customer Service Page

          Let me just say the sets are beautiful. I love how everything matches and I'd love to have one of these sets in my new baby's room. The prices may seem a bit high to those like me who are low income but if you have money to spend on the baby's room, these bedding sets seem well worth the price. You can find bedding to suit whatever theme you are going for with the room.

          REVIEW/GIVEAWAY: Andrea's Pacifier Clips and More

          I mentioned Andrea's Pacifier Clips and More and what they sell a few days ago.

          Now you'll have the chance to win some of her products for your very own!

          But first, some thoughts. I was sent a pacifier clip and toy/sippy cup leash to review. There are over 100 different colours and styles or ribbons to choose from so you can pick what's right for you.

          I chose this cute car ribbon for my pacifier clip. This clip is much better than the one I had previously. My old one used velcro to attach the pacifier. This one uses a snap so the baby will not be able to pull it off (like my girls used to do.) Also the clip for attaching to the clothes is a strong metal clip with plastic teeth that prevents slippage but also won't damage fabrics. A child definitely cannot get it off his clothes.

          The ribbon seems securely attached at both ends and is thick and strong. I could see it lasting through many children.The toy/sippy cup leash has an elastic at the end that you can easily secure to any toy or sippy cup by either putting elastic around the item or putting the leash back through the elastic.

          The metal in the clips is lead and nickel free. The prices are awesome too. The pacifier clips are only $3 and the toy leashes are only $4. The most expensive product is $6!

          GIVEAWAY

          Thanks to Andrea, I am giving away 1 pacifier clip, 1 toy leash and 1 belt clip to one winner in US/CAN. This giveaway is open till June 8, 2011 11:59 PM EST To enter, fill out the FORM.

          Brand New Baby Sponsor Spotlight: Baby Bond

          NOTE: If you are here from a blog hop, please leave a comment on this post instead.

          One of the potential problems nursing mother's face is how to nurse in public without feeling like you are exposing yourself to everyone.

          Putting a blanket over your baby never works for four reasons:
          1. You can't see to position baby.
          2. Many babies don't want a blanket over their head
          3. You can't see baby and connect/bond.
          4. It can get hot!
          Baby Bond is a nursing sash that covers mom, NOT baby.

          There are three types: Original, Flex and Couture.

          Check back for a review and giveaway soon or if you don't want to wait, you can use the code CALLISTA to get 25% off when you purchase your very own Baby Bond. Also if you comment on this post before the giveaway goes up, you can have an extra 2 entries into the giveaway when it's posted.

          Guest Post: The Reasons Why Babies Cry and Tips On How to Soothe Them

          The following is a guest post as part of The Brand New Baby Event.

          Check back for reviews, giveaways, guest posts and more.

          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
          It’s normal for babies to cry. It helps them develop their lungs and it is the only way they have of communicating. Some babies cry more than others. Some perfectly healthy babies can have daily crying spells that last a couple of hours, particularly during the first five months of their lives. For parents it can be an unnerving and exhausting experience. Trying to discover the reason your baby is crying requires patience along with a little trial and error. Through the process of elimination, you can rule out possible causes, starting with the most common reasons and working your way down the list.
          The Checklist – Determining what your baby is trying to tell you
          Ø  I’m hungry. For very young infants, this is the most common reason for crying. They need frequent, small feedings and will usually stop crying once their small stomachs are full.
          Ø  I’m uncomfortable. Some babies will alert you as soon as their nappies need changing. They may also cry because they are lying in an uncomfortable position, or their sensitive skin is being irritated by scratchy fabric or labels in their clothing, or clothing that is too tight. If your baby does have sensitive skin then it’s worth contemplating purchasing an organic cot bed mattress which will be chemical free
          Ø  I’m cold or too hot. Most babies are very sensitive to cold. They like to be warm but not too hot. Generally, an ambient temperature of around 18 degrees C / 64 degrees F is ideal. Touch the skin on their abdomen to gauge how cold or hot they are. Simply added or removing clothes will solve the problem.
          Ø  I want to be held. Some babies need more close physical contact than others.
          Ø  I’m tired. Just like anyone else, babies can become over stimulated and unable to settle down. A cranky, fussy, overtired baby will usually settle down in calm, quiet surroundings.
          Ø  I’m in pain. Gas pains are common as babies have a tendency to swallow air when feeding or crying. If you suspect gas, try burping the baby or laying the infant on its back and moving the legs in a pedaling motion. Check for signs of teething by rubbing your finger over the infant’s gums. Also be alert for signs of fever, congestion, rashes, etc. and contact your pediatrician if you have any concerns.
          Probably the most difficult thing for parents to deal with is when they have run through the checklist only to conclude their baby is crying for no apparent reason.  Their bundle of joy has turned into a screaming banshee and they are at a loss on how to console the infant. Here are a few tips on soothing a crying baby that have worked for other parents.
          Ø  Get moving. Many babies are soothed by motion. Rocking them, putting them in a baby swing, walking around the house holding them, taking them out for a walk in their pushchairs, or for a ride in the car, will often do the trick. When filling the new baby’s room with nursery furniture it’s worth leaving a space for a big comfy nursing chair near to the cot to ease the burden of the night time feeding routine.
          Ø  Try sound and music. Many babies respond well to music, particularly if it has a rhythmic, regular beat, reminiscent of the sound of their mother’s heartbeat while they were in the womb. They also can be soothed by white noise. Try placing the infant child close to a running washer, dryer or dishwasher and if it works, consider purchasing a white noise machine.
          Ø  Try hydrotherapy or massage. If you have a baby that enjoys bath-time, they will likely be soothed by a warm bath and the sound of running water. Gently massaging the baby’s back and tummy can also be very calming.
          Ø  Remain calm. This can seem like a tall order, particularly when you are dealing with a baby who won’t stop crying. But babies will pick up on your anxiety and tension and it only serves to increase their agitation. If you are feeling overwhelmed, take a break; ask for help and let someone else look after the infant for a time. And remember, this too shall pass. As your baby grows and develops new ways of communicating, the crying will become a thing of the past.
          I'm finally ready to bring you The Brand New Baby Event. It's not as large as I'd hoped but that's okay because May and June are busy months for me, especially now.  Over the next little while, expect some sponsor highlights, reviews, guest posts, giveaways and anything else I throw in.
              Carla Hall of Top Chef & CanolaInfo - Cooking Fish Together
              I watch Food Network Shows all the time. One I enjoyed was Top Chef All Stars. Carla Hall, a finalist, was voted fan favourite.
              Carla has teamed up with CanolaInfo to bring you a video and recipe collection for fish dishes. They are designed for those who are unsure how to prepare fish. I don't eat fish. I'm afraid of how it tastes. I don't like that fishy taste. I think I'd try other seafood before fish (such as mussels or shrimp) but I'm in no rush. I know fish is good for me though which makes me think about trying it. However when I do decide to try it, I'd have no idea how to go about it. That's where this collection comes in.The dishes are created using Canola Oil which has the least saturated fat of all the oils and is heart healthy.
              Check out the collection at CanolaInfo.
              TWITTER PARTY!
              Carla is hosting a Twitter party from @CanolaInfo on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 from 8:30-10 pm EST, when she will discuss her new recipe collection, tips on selecting and preparing fish and more! To join, RSVP at Facebook.com/CanolaInfo and then follow @CanolaInfo and use #GoFish during the party. Door prizes will be given to the first 25 attendees.
