5 Things I Have Learned From Being a Girl Guide Leader

I’ve been a Girl Guide leader for 10 years and helped out with units before that. I’ve worked with Sparks (ages 5-6), Brownies (ages 7-8) and Guides (ages 9-11) and currently work with all three. I’ve learned lots of things from my volunteer work with Girl Guides.

5 Things I Learned From Being a Girl Guide Leader

  1. The Importance of Every Child Having an Adult They Can Trust. In an ideal family, the child can trust the parents with their problems, secrets and feelings. Sometimes that isn’t the case and even if it is, sometimes the child finds it too hard to talk to the parent about private issues. That’s where knowing other adults who have gained the child’s trust come in handy. I’ve listened to girls problems a few times or have even just given them a knowing look when we both know what’s going on but no words are exchanged. I do my duty if it comes to disclosing abuse but otherwise, if no one is getting hurt, I’m there for them, to just listen, or give advice if they want.
  2. How to Make Mundane Tasks Fun. Your child despises cleaning bathrooms, going grocery shopping with you, doing dishes and the like. Yet they do it willing at Girl Guides and camp. Why? We make it fun. Part of it is doing it in a group. Part of it is that they helped cook first so clean-up doesn’t seem as bad. Grocery shopping is made fun by making it a scavenger hunt. “This is our list, find the items.” “Which margarine would you choose and why?” This is followed by explaining your choice and why you choose it. And so on.
  3. Every Child Really IS Different. We have all learned that we are all unique but yet we often expect each child to behave in the same way or have the same level of responsibility or knowledge as other children his or her age.  Children (and adults) are not just different in skill level but in personality and ideals too. Some children really can’t sit still for 20 minutes. They aren’t misbehaving, their bodies are not made that way. Some children cannot focus on more than one instruction at a time. It’s not that they are not paying attention, their brain does not work that way. Different children require different expectations.
  4. How to Help the Homesick. At our overnights, we often get a child or even a few, who are homesick. They miss their family, miss their home, miss their pets. It can range from mild moping to full on hysterical crying. Our policy is not to send the child home unless they cannot be consoled at all and it’s been tried for awhile. We do this because the only way to overcome homesickness is to go away from home. Since I used to get homesick when I was younger (and still sometimes do,) I have learned some tricks to help those who are homesick such as drawing them a picture for when they go home, thinking of how proud they will be when they make it and even telling my story of homesickness.
  5. How to Make Learning Fun. At Girl Guides, the girls complete program which earns them badges. We don’t want Girl Guides to be just like school so we don’t give them worksheets to complete or essays to write. We try to keep paper work to a minimum and even then it usually involves games or puzzles somehow. The girls learn best by DOING. So we do Science Experiments, play games, make crafts, engage in drama and go on field trips.

I’ve learned more than that, way more than that. I love being a Girl Guide Leader and highly recommend you get the women and girls in your family involved in Guiding/Scouting in your country.

Girl Guide Disney Themed Camp (Thank You Disney!)

Last week I was gone (that’s why there weren’t any new posts) to our local Girl Guide Camp to help run our “Disney” themed camp. Each day our theme was a different land of Walt Disney World (Epcot, Magic Kingdom, etc.).

Last year our theme focused on self esteem and learning about ourselves. I contacted a few companies and got some sponsors to send me things to hand out to the campers.

This year I approached Disney and they happily agreed to sponsor our Girl Guide Camp!

Each camper went home with a Disney DVD, a Meridia wig (Brave) and Odd Life of Timothy Green socks. They also got some Muppets body stickers.

During the week we made a bunch of crafts we found through Pinterest like this one:

Here are some photos from camp:

(Clockwise: Justin Bieber made an appearance for Hollywood night, A “Brave” Pirate during our Magic Kingdom Parade, Learning about other countries during Epcot night, Face Painting for Animal Kingdom (that’s my son.)

It was a great week and the girls were so happy to go home with great presents (they didn’t even know that they got a DVD because we gift wrapped it and sent it home with them. I wish I could have seen their faces!)

Thank You Disney (Canada)!

I have not attended any of the Circle Square Ranch camps but I have always gone to Girl Guide camp. As a leader I do unit camps throughout the year but I also volunteer for summer camp for one week. When I was 9 I attended summer camp for the first time. I cried every night for my mom but I had a great time. I never actually wanted to go home because I knew I would miss all the fun. So I quietly cried till I fell asleep and then woke up and enjoyed the next day.

As a leader my children have camped since before they were born (in utero) so I hope that they will enjoy going to camp, even without me and when they are old enough, they can go off to summer camp too.

Be The Voice: Instilling Values in Our Girls #BarbieICanBe

I deal with the challenge of showing girls that they are important, smart and special all the time. Not only do I have two daughters of my own but I am a Girl Guide Leader. I work with Sparks (Ages 5-6), Brownies (ages 7-8) AND Guides (Ages 9-11.) In fact the National Service Project for Girl Guides this year has been Empowering Girls. The Mission of Girl Guides of Canada - Guides du Canada is: Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada enables girls to be confident, resourceful and courageous, and to make a difference in the world.

It can be hard at times instilling the values I want my Girl Guides and my daughters to adopt but then I think of how not empowered I felt as a young girl and I want to make sure I do my part. My mother was great, don't get me wrong. She always told me how special and smart I was and at first, I always believed it. However starting about grade 4, life got hard for me at school. I had no real friends, was teased all the time and made to feel like I wasn't a good person. It got to the point where more people were negative towards me than were positive. I don't want my girls to ever go through that.

Barbie has a new initiative dedicated to helping moms with raising their daughters to be smarter, stronger, happier and more fulfilled. Be The Voice features Canadian Parenting Coach Terry Carson sharing parenting tips and ideas each month. Check it out!

*Disclosure: I am participating in the Barbie I Can Be campaign by Mom Central Canada on behalf of Mattel Canada. I received compensation as a thank you for my participation. The opinions on this blog are my own. See my Disclosure Policy for more information.

Thanks to the Summer Camp Sponsors!

A while back I asked for some sponsors for the Girl Guide Summer Camp I am a leader at. Three wonderful companies/people stepped forward!

Thank you to Discovery Girls, New Moon Media and Leanne Power, author of You Are Sooooo Beautiful.

Discovery Girls donated 50 magazines to the camp. Each girl got to go home with one!
Discovery Girls Magazine is for tween girls, by girls. Quizzes, fashion advice, friends, advice and more.

New Moon Girl Media donated a bunch of magazines for the girls as well. New Moon also makes magazines for Tween Girls and there is an online group too.

Leanne Power and The Soulstice Book Company donated 5 copies of their picture book You Are Sooooo Beautiful for the younger children to take home. The book is beautiful and a great way to raise self esteem in your child.
Thank you SO much to these wonderful people! The girls all went home very happy with their "presents."

World Thinking Day 2010

I'm a little late in posting this but today is World Thinking Day. The founders of Scouts and Girl Guides, Lord Robert Baden-Powell and Olave Baden-Powell had a joint birthday today.

On this day we remember our Guiding and Scouting friends around the world and participate in fun events to celebrate.

You can find out more at World Thinking Day. Or you can get the short version at Wikipedia.

Each year has a theme. The theme for 2010 is "together we can end extreme poverty and hunger"

In honour of that theme, please at least find the time to visit The Hunger Site and donate for free.
