Yo Gabba Gabba! Music is Awesome Vol 4 (Holiday Gift Guide 2012)

When I first say Yo Gabba Gabba I was caught off guard and thought it was weird. I steered my kids away from it at first because it was different but slowly the songs caught my attention and I liked how it was different. No soft baby like music, this was like R&B for kids.

Duracell Instant Charger (Holiday Gift Guide 2012)

You know that moment when you aren’t home and you won’t be for a while but your phone is dead or dying and you need to be able to use it? Yeah it happens to everyone.  It sucks. Let’s be honest.

I don’t even rely on my phone as much as some others since I don’t as of yet have a smartphone but I feel lost without my clock and an easy way to communicate with my husband. You can also use it with your ipod or other small devices you can charge with USB.

At the P&G Mom Event I attended in October we were shown a new product from Duracell, called an Instant Charger. I was blown away.

It works like this:

1. Plug it in to your computer at home using USB cable and allow it to charge (it took around an hour or so.)
2. Place it in your purse, bag or car along with the cord you use to charge your phone with USB.
3. When you are out and your phone is dead or drying, plug it into the charger and turn the switch to on and it will charge your phone! We tested it out with my mom’s phone which gained 35% in a little over an hour.  You can still use the phone while it charges if you need to and you can charge it just enough to tide you over till you get home if you want.
4. After use, when you are at home again, recharge up the instant charger so it’s ready for the next time you need it.

What a great invention!

The Instant Charger retails at $44.99  and offers up to 35 hours but there is also the pocket charger which offers up to 15 hours and retails for $29.99

Hold On Scooby Doo! Game (Holiday Gift Guide 2012)

If you are looking for a gift idea for your young Scooby Doo fan (or just game fan) you might consider Hold On Scooby Doo! A wall of bricks is holding up Scooby  Doo and Shaggy.

The game reminds me of a mixture of Jenga and Don’t Break the Ice.

Players take turns using a spooky green hand to push out the bricks one at at time. Decide carefully which block to knock out or the wall will come tumbling down, along with Scooby-Doo and Shaggy. You don’t want to be the one to make the wall come down!

The Game comes with the wall frame, 44 bricks, the Scooby-Doo/Shaggy Figurine, 2 ghost hands and rules. For 2 players or can be played in teams.

You do have to put together the frame first but it’s quite simple. Just snaps the sides into the base and add the stickers on front and back. The instructions for game set up and play are easy to understand.

I wouldn’t recommend letting your younger kids play with this on their own as if they lose the bricks, it gives an unfair edge to the game for future plays. So until my kids can keep their stuff organized and clean, they will be playing this at the kitchen table with supervision.

Heart to Heart Girls–World Dolls Now in Canada

Dolls are a common gift, especially for girls. If you are like me, you can feel like you don’t want any more dolls because your house is being overrun by them. Heart to Heart Girls is different. First of all, they are not babies. Second, they are from different cultures. Third they come with information about the country they come from so they can be educational too.

Introducing Nahji from India

All the dolls come with a bracelet for the child to wear (shown top left in image below) and authentic clothing and accessories -Nahji has Henna on her hand (see below.) The dolls quality is amazing. Nahji’s hair is silky and flows like real hair. She is jointed so her arms and legs move a bit. Her jewellery and clothing are great quality as well.

I’m not sure why there is a doll from the USA and while there are certainly kids there that need help, I would have liked to have seen dolls from other countries not as well of in general as most of North America. Shoes for Crews–Slip Resistant Footwear

I usually dread shoe shopping because I never know what size I should buy since I have a wide foot and I always end up with low quality shoes that split and break in less than a year.

I was offered a chance to try a pair of shoes from Shoes for Crews so I thought I’d try it as I’d never bought shoes online before. Shoes for Crews makes shoes designed for those who walk or stand a lot, especially for their job. For example teachers or medical professionals who don’t sit much during their work day.

Although I don’t have one of those types of jobs, I do walk a lot as I walk my kids to and from school each day, often multiple times per day. I’m also a Girl Guide leader and I do two units so I am pretty much standing from 5:00-9:00pm once a week and that’s not including all the standing I do before it starts as I make dinner and prepare to go.

My Choice: Eastside running shoe (because I’ve always wanted to try a slip on shoe)

I also ended up going to Toronto twice in one month for the She’s Connected Conference and a P&G Mom event so I was on my feet a lot then too. I think I tested them out well.

Why Shoes for Crews is Different

What makes Shoes for Crews shoes different is their patented SFC Mighty Grip Slip-Resistant Outsole. If you go to that link and view the first video, you will see what I mean. I’ve never seen a shoe with grip like this. I tried the shoe in many conditions, hardwood, ceramic, linoleum, cement, grass, asphalt, carpet and wood. I tried all those surfaces that can be outdoors while wet as well. I have not tried snow yet because we have not had any yet. I never slipped, not even once. I normally walk extra carefully when it is raining because I’ve slipped so many times. Now I have to train myself to walk normally again.

The shoe is also water resistant, made of genuine leather, has a padded collar, stitch-reinforced toe and a shock-absorbent outsole.

What Impressed Me Most?

The shoes came with a little shoe cleaner. It looks like a little piece of of the bottom of the shoe with little picks coming out of it that you can run through the lines on the bottom of the shoe to get everything out of it.  I LOVE IT!

How It Performed

The shoe itself is designed beautifully and I'm sure they will last me a long time. I do wish however that I had NOT gone with slip-ons as I had a hard time deciding on shoe size even with their charts and they are a bit big on me. I had a blister for a while on my smaller foot although I'm fine now. I think if they had laces, I would have been able to tie them tighter and make them fit better. Part of my problem was that this shoe doesn’t come in a wide size and I have wide feet. So I really should have picked a shoe that came in wide.

If you know what size your shoes are or at least don’t have problems with them being quite different in size or one wider, I think you would be fine buying shoes online.  Despite this, I am happy with my shoes. I like that they are athletic shoes but look nice if I go out too since I HATE dress shoes.

It’s a Princess Revolution! (Holiday Gift Guide 2012)

My Pretty Playhouse–Cardboard Playhouse (Holiday Gift Guide 2012)

What’s Wrong With a Box?

So are you thinking, cardboard playhouse? Why can’t I just give my kids a cardboard box? Worked when I was a kid. I thought that too at first. However this playhouse is made with thicker, more durable cardboard than most boxes you would get are. It also fits together to actually look like a house with a roof, doors, windows, window boxes, skylight and awnings.

Bigger Than Expected

The kids can draw and colour on it to their hearts content too. It is pretty big though so if you have a very small home, you might have problems. My 5 and 6 year old fit inside with room to move and my tall six year old can stand up in it. It’s designed for ages 3 and up. Although my 20 month old was very interested in it, I had to put it up somewhere he can’t get to it or he would just rip it apart and knock it over.

Only One Small Issue

Speaking of which, although in general it’s made out of hard cardboard, my son did rip the door a bit as we were putting it up and it’s since been ripped off. I wish the doors were thicker since they get opened and shut all the time.

Setting It Up

Putting it together wasn’t TOO hard but it wasn’t super easy either. The directions are included and it recommends two people to put it up so I got my brother to help. I think one person could have done it but it was easier and quicker with the two of us (and we needed to do it quick as the girls were jumping up and down around us asking, “Is it ready yet? Can I go in yet?”)

Best of all, when the kids no longer want it or it’s been so well used it’s broken, you can just recycle it!

Dolphin Organics 100% Natural Baby Products

I’m not a regular user of organic products but I do understand why many people prefer to use organic or natural products in their household. Especially if your child has special skin issues, a natural product that is hypoallergenic would be even more important.

Lavender!

I was given a chance to try Dolphin Organics new line of products that feature a Norfolk Lavender scent. The scent alone had me jumping at the chance. I think lavender is the PERFECT scent for babies.

The lavender scent is currently available in the lotion, Shampoo/Body Wash and Bubble bath. I tried the first two out with my son.  The first thing I noticed is that the lavender scent is stronger in the lotion, which is my favourite.

Just How Natural Is It?

The back of the containers has a chart that shows which ingredients are organic, which are natural and which are artificial (HINT: NONE)

I really like the rest of the packaging as well. The bottles are not easy for a baby to open so you shouldn’t have to worry about your baby grabbing it during bath time and opening it on you. My 19 month old couldn’t open it.  I just LOVE the front of it too:

Unless you live near one of the retailers, you are probably best to buy it online, especially if you live in Canada as it’s only available in two stores, one of which is online only anyways.  

I don’t think my family will go strictly organic/natural anytime soon but I do appreciate that it’s a well made product and would probably make a good choice for a family who is looking for something more organic for their baby.

Recently added are some handcrafts gifts which help women. For example I was sent this Turquoise and Wood bracelet (see below) which was made by women and girls who have escaped exploitation and abuse in Thailand. A purchase of this gift helps support the women creating the jewellery.  You can also get a hand-woven scarf or a Haitian hand-beaded necklace.

The bracelet is beautifully crafted and I love sharing that it was made by women and girls in Thailand. It would be the perfect gift for the fashionista in your life.  It’s quite big so would fit a thicker arm and hang loosely on a thin arm.
