REVIEW: Makenzie Caine Music - Take This Town

Makenzie Caine, Actor and Musician has a CD out called Take This Town.

Mackenzie Caine Take This Town

Makenzie Caine’s music is Indie Pop with a folk/country vibe.

You can listen to the Take This Town Song Here:

My younger daughter absolute LOVES this song, especially the line that goes:
“The strong ones, the brokenhearted.”

Although she keeps thinking she is saying: “The straw wants the brokenhearted.”

It’s always nice to find music that the whole family can enjoy. It’s not kid’s music but my daughter likes it. It’s beautiful and inspiring.  She also sings along with Young Marine.

The focus seems to be on her voice more than the accompaniment which I think is refreshing. A lot of the music I enjoy, it’s more about the beat, often I can’t even tell what the words are. Makenzie has a beautiful voice and she’s not afraid to hide it.

Song List:

  1. Take This Town
  2. Young Marine
  3. Pretty in Red
  4. Sweet Baby
  5. Butterfly
  6. You’re a Doll
  7. Moonshadow

Pretty in Red makes use of a choir which adds another element to the music as each song is not only Makenzie’s voice.  Butterfly is a slower song, good for falling asleep to. It almost sounds like a lullaby.

The CD comes in a cardboard case with original artwork by Jessi Blackham.

Makenzie Caine

You can get a digital download of album for $6.99 USD or a physical CD for $10 USD which is an awesome price.

Connect with Makenzie Caine on Facebook and Twitter

You will have a chance to win the Take This Town CD and a package of her MakieDoll Cards which she also makes starting Sept 16 in the Family Entertainment Extravaganza Hop:You're a Doll Cards

Girl Guide Disney Themed Camp (Thank You Disney!)

Last week I was gone (that’s why there weren’t any new posts) to our local Girl Guide Camp to help run our “Disney” themed camp. Each day our theme was a different land of Walt Disney World (Epcot, Magic Kingdom, etc.).

Last year our theme focused on self esteem and learning about ourselves. I contacted a few companies and got some sponsors to send me things to hand out to the campers.

This year I approached Disney and they happily agreed to sponsor our Girl Guide Camp!

Each camper went home with a Disney DVD, a Meridia wig (Brave) and Odd Life of Timothy Green socks. They also got some Muppets body stickers.

During the week we made a bunch of crafts we found through Pinterest like this one:

Here are some photos from camp:

(Clockwise: Justin Bieber made an appearance for Hollywood night, A “Brave” Pirate during our Magic Kingdom Parade, Learning about other countries during Epcot night, Face Painting for Animal Kingdom (that’s my son.)

summercamp

It was a great week and the girls were so happy to go home with great presents (they didn’t even know that they got a DVD because we gift wrapped it and sent it home with them. I wish I could have seen their faces!)

Thank You Disney (Canada)!

#OCanadaBaby–Supporting #TeamCanada at the London 2012 Olympics

Back in April I shared that Pampers Canada and Canadian Olympian Priscilla Lopes-Schliep had gotten together to create the first version of O Canada performed by babies. My son Liam was in the first cut of the video and every so often they released a longer version.

Well I’m ecstatic to announce that with the launch of The 2012 London Olympics today, the final version of the video is being shown AT THE OLYMPICS!

That’s my baby there at about 13 seconds in (in red with red cellphone.)

GO TEAM CANADA!

REVIEW: Netflix Canada -

Having heard great things about Netflix, we applied for our one month free trial (which you can get yourself from the Netflix website.) We've had it for 3 weeks and our family LOVES it. I figured I wouldn't use it too much since I don't watch movies that often but I've gotten into watching Heroes since I missed it the first time around. I like watching TV shows one after the other, with no commercials or week long breaks!

Pros
  • Cheap - Only $7.99/month, taken directly from your credit card.
  • Unlimited movies and TV shows and what's there is added to constantly. Bound to be something you like!
  • Rate the shows and movies you watch to see recommendations.
  • You can watch it on your TV through your gaming consoles (Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3 etc..), handheld devices (ipad/ipod), blue ray, home theater and more.
  • If it's using up too much of your bandwidth, you can adjust the video quality to use less.
  • There are parental controls (although I haven't tried them out)
Cons
  • Not EVERY movie is available that you could normally rent.
  • To use on your PS3 you have to be signed in to playstation network for some weird reason (you can browse web without being on network.) So if network is down or won't sign in, you can't use netflix.
  • It's addicting!
*We will be paying for our subscription ourselves, I was not compensated in anyway. I just wanted to review it!

REVIEW: Your Shape Wii Game

Disclosure: I'm a BzzAgent and as such I sometimes participate in BzzCampaigns where I receive a product to try out and sometimes I might get coupons to share or samples to hand out (depending on what the item is). In exchange for the item, I'm to tell people about the product, what my honest thoughts are about it. Then I report back what I said and any reaction of those I told. I generate Bzz. (Buzz.) I can also review the item on a blog if I want.

You may have heard about Your Shape with Jenny McCarthy for Wii. It's a new exercise program for your Wii that doesn't require a Wii balance board.

 Features
  • After doing a detailed fitness test, goal assessment and body scan, Your Shape builds a fitness program for you.
  • There are more than 400 exercises in different area (cardio, strength training, toning, flexibility etc.) so your workout isn't always exactly the same.
  • You don't need the controller or a balance board. It comes with a small camera that watches you work out and compares you to the proper way to do the move and offers feedback.
  • The game tracks your progress as you get closer to your goals.
  • Jenny McCarthy is your guide, showing you what to do and encouraging you to keep going.
  • You can do specialized workouts such as Get Bikini Ready, New Year's Resolutions, Free Your Mind and Active Mom Routine
  • If you have a balance ball, weights a step bench, or a heart rate monitor, you can use it with the game, but these items are in no way required.

So what do I think? I think it's a great start but that the program could use some work. Here are my problems:
  • I understand how the camera works but the problem is, I'm overweight and I don't necessarily want to see my body bouncing all over the place. Not to mention how skinny Jenny McCarthy is (even skinner in Wii format) which just makes me feel worse.
  • By the same token, you see your house as it is behind you. My house does NOT look like it does in the sample screen shot above. So I see the clutter and dirty walls behind me.
  • There is no option for light workout. It's quite hard sometimes, especially for me who is out of shape. I have troubles holding my hands up for any length of time and my balance is poor. I had to cheat on quite a few of them and I ended most of my workouts early (even though they are only 15 minutes long.)
  • The music. It comes with over 70 tracks but I don't like most of them. I don't even recognize most of them. When you are in the menu it plays a fast version of Umbrella by Rihanna which is great so I was expecting popular music during the workouts but they are all instrumental and I don't recognize them. They don't motivate me.
There are good things of course. Everything I mentioned in the features section is good. I think Your Shape would be better for someone who is not completely out of shape and could keep up better. Hopefully by doing the workout regularily I will get better and the exercises will become easier but it's hard not to quit for good when I can't even do 8 minutes of workout at one time. So if you aren't too overweight and can walk up stairs without getting tired and hold your hands up for a long time, this might be for you.

REVIEW: Just Dance Wii Game

Disclosure: I'm a BzzAgent and as such I sometimes participate in BzzCampaigns where I receive a product to try out and sometimes I might get coupons to share or samples to hand out (depending on what the item is). In exchange for the item, I'm to tell people about the product, what my honest thoughts are about it. Then I report back what I said and any reaction of those I told. I generate Bzz. (Buzz.) I can also review the item on a blog if I want.

This time I had the pleasure of reviewing two Wii games, one of which I'm telling you about today.

Just Dance (Ubisoft) is a great party game but can also be played by yourself. Up to four players at a time can bust a move to 32 different songs. There is a WIDE variety of songs, so there should be something here for everyone. I can dance pop, rock, country, tribal, hip hop and more.

My favourite songs to dance to are Womanizer by The Gym All-Stars (NOT Britney Spears), Hot N Cold by Katy Perry, Who Let the Dogs Out by Baha Men and Cotton Eyed Joe by Rednex. Want to see the full list of songs on Just Dance?

The dance moves for all the songs were choreographed by professional dancers and the moves are shown on the screen for you to follow. You can see what Pump Up the Jam looks like. The dancer on the screen does the current move and little people icons scroll across the bottom to show you what's next. You rack up points based on how well you did (X, OK or GREAT!) and if you keep getting GREATs you become "on fire" and your point bar has flames. (see either side of the dancer in the link above.)

I think it's a great way to have fun when you have friends over. Teenagers and young adults would absolutely love this. Friends can join in anytime with a press of a button, even during a song! Just make sure you have a large space if you are having more than two dancers as we inadvertently smacked a few people and animals with a Wii remote because they were too close while we were dancing.

One way it could be better would be to have tutorial's for each song. There is a basic tutorial that just gives you some tips and hints in general. However there are some songs and certain moves that I'm sure I'm doing right but I still get an X. A slow motion shot of the move with explanation would be helpful. I'm sure I'll get it eventually but a tutorial would have been better.  Also, even though some moves have to be done exactly right to count, other times I can sit on the couch, have the Wii remote beside me on the couch while the game is playing, move a little and it counts points.

The game also has 2 other modes. Strike a Post is like dancing Red Light Green Light. Stop when it says Stop and Go when it Says Go but be careful because you might Stop while you're friend is still moving and Go while she's stopped! In Strike a Pose, you have 7 lives and each time you make a mistake, you lose a life. If you can get 5 correct moves in a row, you win back a life. Last one with a life heart wins. This is for those who have really practiced a certain song.

Do you have a video camera? You can enter to win in the Just Dance $1000 weekly sweepstakes. You don't have to own Just Dance to enter. If you DO own it, record yourself dancing to any song (except A Little Less Conversation) and post it to You Tube and enter to win at the link above. If you don't have Just Dance, download You Can't Touch This or Fame from the website and record yourself dancing to it. Check out the link for full details.

  • At the supermarket, have your kids help read the signs so you can find the ingredients you need
  • As you cook, read the recipe out loud every step of the way

Review: My Little Pony Twinkle Wish Adventure

Release Date: October 13, 2009
Rating: Not Rated
Total Running Time: 81 minutes
From Shout Factory and Hasbro

Story Summary: All the ponies can't wait for the Winter Wishes Festival where the Wishing Star grants each pony one special wish. But when the Wishing Star disappears, they go on a journey to find it. But will they make it back in time for the festival? Join Pinkie Pie and all her pony friends on their journey as they discover that friendship can make wishes come true!

Although this is the first My Little Pony DVD my daughters have ever seen I used to watch My Little Pony on TV when I was a child in the late 80s, early 90s. I must say the graphics are much better now but the show is just as fun. My daughters are almost four and two and a half and they absolutely loved it, especially my elder daughter. In fact, she watched it two times in a row and has watched it every day since then at least once a day, sometimes two or three times.

We also checked out the special features which include a new animated short called Elefun and Friends which both children liked and a Waiting for the Winter Wishes Festival prequel which they now always watch before the show. There is also six sing-along songs and downloadable activities such as a Pony Note to Santa and Cut-Out Pony Ornaments.

I asked my eldest what her favourite part of the movie was and she said all of it. So I showed her a picture of all the ponies and asked her which one was her favourite and she pointed to each and every one and said "This one and this one and this one..." So needless to say, I'll be buying more My Little Pony products and videos for my children.

You can see a very short clip from the video from Shout Factory or watch the almost five minute prequel on the Hasbro site. Keep in mind that the actual video is in much better quality than these videos.

REVIEW: 'The Middle' premieres on ABC this fall

(l-r) Eden Sher as Sue, Neil Fynn as Mike, Atticus Shaffer as Brick, Patricia Heaton as Frankie, Charlie McDermott as Axl (Photo: Warner Bros. Television Entertainment/Richard Foreman)

Warner Bros. Television's new fall series "The Middle" premieres on ABC Wednesday, September 30th at 8:30 p.m.

However I got a sneak preview of the pilot episode and I wanted to share my thoughts with you here. First a little bit about the series:
"Forget about athletes, movie stars and politicians. Parents are the real heroes—but we think Frankie Heck (Patricia Heaton), must be some kind of superhero. A loving wife and mother of three, she's middle class in the middle of the country and is rapidly approaching middle age.

Frankie and her husband, Mike (Neil Flynn), have lived in Orson, Indiana, their whole lives. A man of few words (every one a zinger), Mike is a manager at the town quarry and Frankie is the third-best used car salesman (out of the three) at the local dealership. She may not be a high-powered career woman, but when it comes to her family, she'll go to just about any length. And with kids like these, she had better. There's Axl (Charlie McDermott), her semi-nudist teenage son conceived while under the influence of Guns N' Roses; Sue (Eden Sher), the awkward teenage daughter who fails at everything… but with the utmost of gusto; and their seven-year-old son Brick (Atticus Shaffer), whose best friend is his backpack.

Sometimes it seems like everyone is trying to get to the top, or struggling not to hit bottom, but we think Frankie and her family will find a lot of love, and a lot of laughs, somewhere in
The Middle."
With Patricia Heaton (wife from Everybody Loves Raymond) and Neil Fynn (janitor from Scrubs) as the parents, you know the shows going to be funny. The parent dynamic is different from other sitcoms but I didn't realize what it was till I read this Interview with Patricia Heaton on StarPulse. I read the interview AFTER seeing the show and it spelled out for me what is different about it. Most family sitcoms have a lazy father who tries to get out of doing everything while the wife does everything around the house. It was funny originally but has since gotten old, not to mention degrading to the good fathers. The Middle is different, both parents do what they can to keep the family moving, and Oh what a family it is.

The kids were all funny in their own way but the youngest boy Brick played by Atticus Shaffer is hilarious! This show actually was made into a pilot before with Ricki Lake as the mom and some other actors as the rest of the family but Atticus was playing Brick then too. They made a wise choice in keeping him as Brick for this second pilot. He's so quirky it's hilarious!

There were times I was laughing out loud (Mike (father) seems to be able to come up with the laughs just as easily as when he was on Scrubs.) but I don't know that I identified as much as I could have. However, that's probably because while I am middle class, I don't live in middle class USA, nor am I near Middle age and I'm not in the middle of nowwhere. My children are only two and three so I haven't gone through most of what the Hecks have gone through.

I think the show's pretty funny but if the kids are always this dysfunctional, it might get a little old.

Stiletto Women Magazine

Stiletto Woman Magazine, published by Stiletto Woman, Inc. (www.StilettoWoman.com), is a publication that celebrates the accomplishments of women who have a presence on the web, and are doing amazing things in business, online, and in communities around the world!

They are launching their premiere issue this summer with their Amazing Women edition, where they rank the Top 50 Women on the Web!

"We set out to find women who were innovative, showed great leadership, and had a desire to help others both locally and nationwide! We want to inspire women in your online community by spreading our mission and highlighting the winning top 50!"

I had a chance to ask the women in charge a few questions:

What inspired the creation of Stiletto Women Magazine?
We love to answer this question! The idea came from a few places.

Often times, when you hear about the accomplishments of women, particularly in business, you’ll read stories of those who worked in renowned companies…you know, the Microsoft’s of the world, and how they used their astounding experience, know-how, and stellar contacts to launch a business. This is great because we can all learn from these trailblazing ladies, but what about women who have the passion, the gut instincts, and the capacity to learn fast, but lack information, support, and capital? You don’t hear about them in many major market magazines.

It can be discouraging trying to accomplish something so challenging, when you don’t see others doing what you aspire to do. Many want to see others who have been in their shoes take the same risks, and make it! When developing Stiletto Woman, we would frequently read about women accomplishing so much. However, it wasn’t relatable.

Of course, one can be successful with investors, an extensive bank loan, or business strategist at your fingertips. We want to say to other females and to the world (in business and in life) “Hey, there really are regular women, doing brilliant things every day, and they’re doing it their way.”

We also want to give the common woman a voice by addressing every side of us. It’s important to read of our successes and failures, because life is full of them! We intend to inspire in a real way. Yes, we approach things in a stylish manner, but our focal point is not a pair of $800 high heels! Particularly in the magazine, we will talk about fashion and other hip topics in a well-rounded, comprehensive kind of way—not carelessly. To us, there was a lack of that. So you’ll find an open and receptive way of discussing what really happens in our lives.

What topics are covered in the magazine?
Our editorial vision is to empower today’s modern woman. Our intent is to tell real stories, provide real inspiration, and impact real life! Therefore, each edition we publish has a defined purpose with targeted content.

We aim to publish work that has substance—that is relevant to most. Next year, Stiletto Woman Magazine will be published tri-annually, where two issues will be dedicated to real life circumstances of every day women.

For our premiere 2009 Amazing Women issue, you will find the ranking of the Top 50 Most Amazing Women on the Web. In addition, you can read articles about time management, living sensibly in this economy, how to be a better leader in the workplace, and more.

Our next release will be the Winter Edition, Women’s Health issue, where we learn more about how to live healthier lives from experts. You’ll find stories of women who have had health challenges—some of them have overcome, while others battle daily to conquer their medical conditions.

Subsequent to that, the Fall Edition, College Mom’s issue, will address concerns specifically related to adult education. You’ll find stories of challenge and triumph. We’ll look at issues from various perspectives, again with expert opinions to help guide and enlighten the discussion.

How did you choose the top 50 women?
We started with over 100 women. Each was diverse and inspiring in her own way. We couldn’t believe the range of talent and level of commitment the women had. We knew it would be a tough task to narrow it down. Therefore, we didn’t review the candidates based on a single idea or site alone. We evaluated them on the following criteria:

1) Idea Innovation. We looked at originality, how imaginative they were, how creative they were in executing their ideas, and communicating the brand.

2) Professional Leadership. We assessed their background, their ability to lead, the ethics they upheld, and sense of character.

3) Supportive Community. We wanted to see their desire to help others. We looked at their social impact, and sense of community.

4) Site Design. Being that we’re looking at women who have a presence online, the web site or blog site had to exhibit professionalism. It needed to be effective in delivery, with good layout and design.

Our panel of eight professional women then used a scoring system to select the top 50! It was important for the magazine to exhibit diversity—not solely in the range of women featured, but also in the types of businesses, web sites, and blog sites showcased. You won’t find many large corporations or illustrious personalities mentioned. We deliberately profiled authentic women you might not hear about every day.

How often is the magazine published and can it be subscribed to?

We launched with our Amazing Woman issue this year. However, next year the magazine will be published in the Winter, Spr/Summer, and Fall. Each year two issues will be dedicated to a particular topic, and each summer we’ll release our Amazing Women of the year.

We will begin accepting subscriptions for our 2010 editions later this year. So stay tuned to stilettowoman.com to find out when you can get the magazine automatically delivered to your mailbox!

How can one apply to be considered as an Amazing Woman for 2010?
We are already gearing up for next year! Our application process is simple. You go to our website at stilettowoman.com, and click on the magazine link. You will see information about submitting your entry. We will begin accepting submissions later in the year. However, due to demand, we may accept them sooner.

Submissions will be sent through on our site, and can come in from a variety of ways:

· They can come from the candidates themselves· They can come from suggestions of other people
· They can come from our research, and those we seek out

The assessment process takes a good amount of time. Therefore if you or someone you know is interested, we recommend getting your site in tip-top shape, ensure your message positively impact others, and don’t forget to show your creativity. We have several months left to the open submission period, so take that time to decipher how you’re going to give us your best pitch! When you’re ready, log on to our website, and submit!

As women we know that girls are bombarded every day by disrespectful, exploitive media that can make them feel confused and powerless. As a parent, it can feel overwhelming.

Research shows that one of the best ways to counteract negative media is to put girls in the “driver’s seat” as media creators. That’s what New Moon’s been doing for sixteen years. And it works. Every week I hear from young women who subscribed to our award-winning magazine when they were girls. This recent email from Marit Knutson is typical: “I am a New Moon "grad" so to speak. Just wanted to drop a line and say thank you. I can't tell you how transformative New Moon was for me as young girl. I had an awareness of issues that girls have to face, and felt empowered by the mag.”

Now, with NewMoonGirls.com, even more girls worldwide can make their own media (every day if they want!) and share it with each other. They learn more about themselves and about the world while having great fun and connecting.

Giving every girl the chance to discover, create and share with other girls worldwide is my passion. I hope you will visit our site and check it out. Callista, if you like what you find, please help us spread the word about the priceless gift of creativity and empowerment that New Moon provides to girls ages 8-12. It changes their lives and that can change our world for the better.

I checked out the site, what you can see for free and it looks like a really good place to be. I was already familiar with New Moon as a girl's magazine written by girls for girls so this is just an improvement. If you have girls ages 8-12 I encourage you to check it out.

NOTE: I'm not getting paid to tell you about this so you can be sure I really do recommend it.

Childhood Language Delays Go Unrecognized by Parents

One out of every twelve kids less than five years of age in Canada experiences a delay in language development. Yet a recent poll has revealed that 94% of Canadian parents of children under five rate their child’s language skills as average or above indicating that there is a potential to not recognize speech and language delays in pre-school children.

As a result, many children may be starting school without the fundamental language and early literacy skills that ensure academic success – and some of those children may never catch up.

Angus Reid Strategies conducted a one-day online survey on behalf of The Hanen Centre. The Hanen Centre is a not-for-profit authority in the development of family-focused early language intervention programs and learning resources. The survey was conducted among a randomly selected, representative sample of 1003 adult Canadians. The full report of their findings can be downloaded here. (pdf)

One of the learning resources available from The Hanen Centre is a calendar that can help parents of preschoolers to incorporate language and literacy tips into daily activities and play routines.
Here's a sampling of the tips included in the calendar:

* Follow the child's lead in conversation and keep conversations going as long as possible

* Create an environment full of meaningful print

* In addition to reading books together, make grocery lists, write birthday cards and read advertising flyers.

* Use unfamiliar vocabulary in everyday conversation, explaining what the words means

I will be receiving a copy of this calendar and will add to this post after I see it with my thoughts.

UPDATE: I've received my copy! The calendar has 8 tips for each month, 4 for in the classroom and 4 for at home. The classroom tips and home tips are similar under each category, but just tailored for teacher vs parent, class vs children. There are four categories of tips for each month: Daily Activities, Pretend Play, Reading Books and On The Go.

Each month is dedicated to a different skill/idea such as Follow the Child's Lead in Conversations, Increase Children's Everyday Vocabulary, Stimulate Children to Think Beyond the Here-and-Now and Encourage Play with Sounds, Syllables and Words.

The ideas are great and are things every parent (and teacher) should be doing with the children in their care. I've been doing most of these activities since my children were born and people often remark that they think they are older than they are because they talk so well and have such a rich vocabulary. I'm not trying to brag I just want to illustrate that I can vouch for these ideas. Below is a sample of some of the ideas.

In the Classroom:

Use new words when pretending with the children and explain them by using simpler, familiar words. "I am anxious because I can't find my baby. I am very worried." Use the new words often in other situations.

Ask children to find pictures in an alphabet book that begin with a certain letter. When they find the correct picture, talk about the sound the letter makes.

At home:

Read the words on cereal boxes. Count the number of words on each box and see if any have the same letters. Talk about words and letters and point to the words as you read them.

Collect souvenirs from a trip. Use the items to inspire your child to dictate a story about the trip. Create a book from his story and read it with him. Leave it where he can "read" it himself.

The poster is a quick at-a-glance chart that summarizes the emergent literacy skills that children need to learn and what months you will find activities for that skill in the calendar.

My only suggestion for a way to make this product better would be to make the calendar also usable as a calendar. Right now the ideas are printed across the weeks so you can't use the calendar as a calendar itself.
